Citizen expresses grievances against city

Posted

I’m writing this letter to the editor in concern for our small town and the changes we’ve been experiencing.

It seems the people running our city may be out of touch with the citizens it’s supposed to represent. First they start “implementing” taxes on things that were once free, like forcing residents to buy permits to have a garage sale. People don’t always want to sell their possessions but they have bills to pay rather than beg or borrow, this is how people who work fulltime but still struggle use to make up the shortfall. Now you must first give the city its tax permit which in essence is another bill itself.

I remember the newspaper running front page headlines City won’t allow Obama to take guns away, even though he never did, they had Come & Take It on headline and everything but as soon as open carry law was passed our city council wanted to ban guns at City Hall was the headline on Tuesday but, after angry calls from 2nd amendment supporting constituents by Friday’s headline it was a complete reversal and they supported Open Carry.

“Politicians” raised our taxes, maybe if they quit appointing people to government positions, quit giving everybody an assistant and how about that $135,000 our “new” city manager is getting paid.

Remember when that courthouse downtown was enough to run our small town? Now it’s all bloated bureaucracy scattered throughout our county and we foot the bill. Our city spent millions on a water treatment facility after memos saying it may cause cancer, now we’re paying $41,000 more for someone to investigate fecal matter in our water.

Wow, Johnnie Ray Johnson gets life for stealing empty cash register, city employee steals thousands gets probation. Man convicted of indecency with a child sexual contact, aggravated sexual assault and sexual assault numerous counts gets 90 days in jail and probation. Is this equal justice? Officials elected, appointed shouldn’t be allowed to escape justice on exposure if they engage in misconduct because of a “clause” in their contract with the city.

Everyone from the city manager to the small-town citizen in our county should be treated equally, no exception. I say the next time elections come around we ask the candidates to sign and pledge no raising taxes, pedophiles be given jail time, no appointing of positions that tax payers foot the bill for, no raising fees on city recreational activities like the pools and pavilions, if they won’t someone will.
