Cardinals open district with undefeated foe

SHINER — This season has been a bit unorthodox for the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals. Despite the late start, the Cardinals are progressing and improving, and after taking on two good teams the past two weeks, head coach Jake Wachsmuth believes his team has shown that they “have the capability of being good.”

“It certainly hasn’t been a normal season,” he admitted. “There’s a whole lot of people in the area that are having to go through that, some of them worse than us.”

Tonight they take on their first district opponent, an undefeated Brentwood Christian (4-0) team that boasts a running-attack on offense, and a “bend don’t break mentality” on defense, as Wachsmuth scouted.

“They are definitely more of a running team,” he said. “Both of their running backs have done good things.”

As for the defense, Brentwood Christian runs and odd-front, or a “50”, where the team will put down a nose tackle and have two deep in the secondary.

“They blitz some, but not much,” Wachsmuth said.

As for the Cardinals, their hope is to cut down on the turnovers.

“This past week we had one, previous week we had two,” Wachsmuth said.

The Cardinals have had some pre-snap penalties issues as well.

On the defensive side of the ball, although they have forced turnovers as well, Wachsmuth wants that unit to cut down on the big plays.

“Defensively we have to try to eliminate big plays,” he said. “We’ve bene forcing turnovers, interceptions and fumble recoveries, but in each game we’ve given up at least one play with a good chunk of yards.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as the Cardinals are on the road tonight.
