SHINER ST. PAUL

Cardinals looking for self-improvement in non-district bout

With a 29-21 victory over the Austin Saints last week, the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals (2-1) look ahead at continuing to fix their mistakes and be playoff ready by district. Last Friday, the Cardinals cleaned up some mistakes by limiting their turnovers. This week, they take on the Cypress Christian Warriors (1-2), a team coming off a 47-13 victory.

Offensively, Cypress Christian runs a spread offense ran by senior quarterback #11 Drue Hirth. Hirth has some experience, but lost some receivers from last year’s team, according to Wachsmuth.

“They probably throw the ball better than they run,” he scouted.

On defense, the Warriors run an odd front, mostly a 3-4, though against the Cardinals, the team is expected to stack the box and rotate in a lot of athletes.

For St. Paul, the team is focusing on keeping their turnovers down while also eliminating some penalties.

“If we caught the ball a little better, we’d probably had 100-some odd yards passing,” Wachsmuth added.

Wachsmuth explained that in last week’s games, there were too many passes that were dropped that they “should have caught, but those are at least aren’t turnovers.”

Defensively, the Cardinals need to be better with their technique as well as their positioning.

“[Austin Saints] had a big run in the first half and had one of our players kept his position, it wouldn’t have happened,” Wachsmuth said.

Cypress Christian comes in with two losses, but this is a team that’s two years removed from a state title.

Kickoff for the game is set for 7:30 p.m.
