Cardinals locked in at top seed

SHINER — Shiner St. Paul (6-3, 4-1) comes out of their bye week fresher and ready to go again after a big win over their rivals Hallettsville Sacred Heart (5-5, 4-2). This week they take on San Marcos Academy (1-7, 1-4), a team that’s struggled this season.

“The fact that they struggled a little bit, [San Marcos Academy] are in a position where they have nothing to lose,” Cardinals’ head coach Jake Wachsmuth warned. “For our kids, it’s an opportunity to go on the road and hopefully continue what we started.”

Early in the year, St. Paul have had some issues with mistakes, especially with turnovers. Recently those turnovers have gone down and the Cardinals hope to keep it that way.

San Marcos Academy boasts a dual-threat quarterback out of a spread formation.

“They’ve done some good things on offense,” Wachsmuth scouted. “The last ball game, they got in the 10 twice and fumbled. It’s a little misleading when you watch the film. It’s not like they don’t have guys that can do things. They do.”

Defensively, they will show either a split formation or an eight-man front. But Wachsmuth isn’t necessarily worried about what other opposing defenses show, so long as the Cardinals’ offense continues to limit their mistakes and execute their plays.

Due to the way TAPPS has set up the district, Shiner St. Paul are currently locked in the top seed out of District 5 – Div. III/IV. Although Boerne Geneva is on top of the district, they will compete in the Division III bracket while St. Paul, who has a tiebreaker over Sacred Heart, will compete in Division IV.

Tonight’s game is at San Marcos, with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
