Cardinals knock off rivals

SHINER — Shiner St. Paul was able to knock off their rivals Friday night with 21 unanswered points as the Cardinals beat the Hallettsville Sacred Heart 42-21 at home.

Big plays were key for the home team as St. Paul scored on a 68-yard run by Conor Kresta in the first quarter than a 64-yard run by quarterback Austin Barton early in the second to go up 14-0. The Indians scored two touchdowns, both on Braden Popp’s passes to cut the lead to 14-13. In the third quarter, Barton found Jacob Darilek for a 41-yard touchdown pass. Popp then threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Brett Rother to tie the game at 21. Early in the fourth, Barton again was a part of the scoring as he found Ryan Bell for a 14-yard touchdown pass then later had a 68-yard touchdown run to go up 35-21. Cole Brown picked off Popp for a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown to give the Cardinals what would be the final score of 42-21.

Barton was the leading rusher, running 17 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Kresta had 13 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Over the air, Barton went 4-for-9 for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Bell caught two of them for 33 yards and a score. Darilek had one touchdown grab for 41 yards.

The Cardinals are now tied with the Indians at 4-1 in district. Boerne Geneva are up top with their 4-0 record. St. Paul has an open week this week.
