Now that the district season is officially over for the boys’ teams as well as for private schools, five area teams will start their quest for a state title in their respective brackets.

Waelder Wildcats eyes rematch against district-rival Moulton

The Waelder Wildcats have had an up-and-down season, coming in third place in District 30-1A behind Moulton and Dime Box. After their loss to Moulton on Jan. 31, head coach Jacob Garcia noted that he preferred the third-place path rather than the second place.

“I was looking at brackets the other day and obviously the easiest road to regionals is winning district,” he said weeks ago. “We’d have to go through Region 32 which I believe is McMullen County. The second easiest is the third seat because, I forget which team we would have to go through, but we would end up meeting Moulton again because they’re probably going to be district champs. We’re eyeing that third round because we just want to be fueled. I think this is the perfect game to be fueled.”

The Wildcats will have to go through Goodrich next Tuesday where they will meet at Royal High School on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. The winner will face McMullen County in the next round.

Undefeated district champs ready for state-title rematch

The Shiner St. Paul Lady Cardinals breezed through district, winning all six games to claim another district title. However, the trophy the second-ranked Lady Cardinals have their eyes on is the Class 2A girls championship.

St. Paul lost in the state finals last season to Lubbock Southcrest Christian. after being up 10 points headed to the fourth quarter. The defending champions are ranked first in TAPPS 2A. Southcrest Christian is on the other side of the bracket, so a rematch between both teams is a possibility.

The road to the state championship game at West High School north of Waco begins in Shiner where the Lady Cardinals host Bryan St. Joseph on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with tipoff set at 5:30 p.m. Shiner St. Paul previously beat Bryan St. Joseph 44-29 on Jan. 4.

The winner plays either Bryan Allen or Huntsville Alpha Omega.

St. Paul boys hoping for longer postseason run

Last year, the Shiner St. Paul Cardinals got to the third round, losing to Huntsville Alpha Omega Academy 55-51. The undefeated district champions hope to improve on that this season as they host Conroe Covenant Christian on Monday, Feb. 18 with tipoff scheduled at 6 p.m.

The Cardinals are ranked seventh in the TABC TAPPS 2A state rankings. The winner faces a tough road to state as they will take on either Galveston O Connell or Bryan Allen Academy (currently ranked first in TAPPS 2A).

Lady Eagles showing strength

It’s been written about many times, but this message deserves repeating. Despite placing third in District 27-3A, the Luling Lady Eagles are showing they are no pushover. Previously state ranked, the Lady Eagles went through a tough district, losing two games to Poth (currently ranked seventh in Class 3A) and splitting games with Karnes City (ranked 12th in Class 3A). Luling knocked off Industrial (ranked 25th in Class 3A) 41-26 on Tuesday.

#15 Lago Vista will be another tough test for the Lady Eagles, though Luling has shown time and time again that they are up for it. They play Friday, Feb. 15 at Taylor High School. The winner takes on San Antonio Cole or Karnes City. Luling previously beat SA Cole 49-48. Karnes City won their first game against Luling 67-27 while Luling won the rematch 50-47.

District champs ready for playoffs

The Luling Eagles won District 27-3A outright after knocking off Poth at home 55-50 on Tuesday. The district championship is their first in 22 years according to Athletic Director Stacey Martin.

Despite coming out the first seed, Luling’s first game will be against a worthy opponent. The Edna Cowboys may have finished fourth in District 28-3A, but their district record was 10-4, one game behind the three-way tie of Columbus, Hallettsville and Industrial.

Luling and Edna play Tuesday, Feb. 19 in Cuero with tipoff scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
