Four area teams traveled to Yoakum for a cross-country meet last Saturday, many of whom found some success at the track.

On the varsity girls’ side, Gonzales’ Veronica Moreno took second overall in the race. Stephanie Reyna played 13th, Shelby Davis placed 30th, Emily Moore finished 41st and Emily Moreno finished 42nd. The team finished fifth overall.

The rest of the young Lady Apache runners ran in the junior varsity race, dominating the grouop by scoring a perfect score.

“The young group for Gonzales just flat dominated the competition of 12 total schools,” Gonzales Head Coach Cully Doyle said. “Our girls team scored a perfect score with having the first five runners cross the line from Gonzales. Leading the way was freshman Kaylin Ramirez, Krisanta Esquival, Genna Kelly, Brooklyn Simper and Pricilla Pizana and M Kenna Malt all finishing first through sixth. The girls team taking home the team championship was what the girls expected and nothing less.”

Shiner St. Paul had a good showing, with their top runner placing third overall. Julianna Davis led the way for the Lady Cardinals to a seventh-place team finish. Other top runners include Bailey Blair at 34th, Grace Pilat at 47th, Macy Grabarkievtz at 52nd, Sarah Barecky at 59th, Taylor Wauson at 88th and Holly Hull at 95th.

Scores and times will be posted on the Gonzales Inquirer website.

The three Nixon-Smiley runners also competed in the race, with Shayla Muñoz placing 83rd, Lilliana Jenks placing 86th and Sidney Alvarez finishing 96th overall.

The Shiner Comanches made their presence known as well, splitting their racers into Shiner Purple and Shiner Gold. Shiner Purple placed ninth amongst the team totals while Shiner Gold placed 12th. Leading the way for Shiner Purple were Lillian Egan, Marian Grosenbacher, Hannah Pustka, Hana Lehnert, Jacy Chrismon and Autumn Bishop.

On the boys side, Antonio Hernandez took on the varsity boys race, finishing 10th overall. Avery Almaguer placed 13th in the same race while Ruben Ortiz took 19th.

“We only ran three boys on varsity this week,” Doyle explained. “All three boys finished in the top 20 as individuals. Antonio Hernandez lead the way followed close by Avery Almaguer and Ruben Ortiz.”

The JV boys also dominated the competition by having Avram Almaguer finish as the first-place finisher, which led to the Apaches taking home the team championship trophy.

St. Paul had two top five runners on the varsity side, vaulting the Cardinals to fourth as a team. Lane Jackson placed third overall while Walker Jackson took fifth. Dalton Jahn placed 25th, Sam Benes was 38th and Cade Davis was 51st.
