Nixon-Smiley in win-and-in scenario
The Mustangs took a 28-6 loss against Natalia last Friday, dropping to 1-3 in District 15-3ADII, tied with Skidmore-Tynan in the standings. Quarterback Xavier Arias led the offense, rushing 13 times for 153 yards and a touchdown. Jesse Riojas added 19 rushes for 85 yards. Defensively, Arias had one sack and also led the team in solo tackles with 12. Both Bradyn Martinez and Jeremy Van Gundy came away with one interception each.
Despite the loss, with Nixon-Smiley’s head-to-head victory over Skidmore-Tynan, the Mustangs can still make the playoffs with a victory over Dilley (0-4) this Friday.
Skidmore-Tynan (1-3) host Natalia (3-1) while Stockdale (3-1) travels to Poth (4-0).
In case of a three-way tie, the tiebreaker in the district is points scored (capped at 18) between the opponents. For instance, if Dilley were to beat Nixon-Smiley and Skidmore-Tynan loses to Natalia, then Dilley, Nixon-Smiley and Skidmore-Tynan would be all tied at fourth place with a 1-4 district record. In this scenario, the Mustangs would need to lose by less than 18 points in order to make the playoffs. Anything more and the teams would have to go to a different tiebreaker.

Cardinals aiming at district title
Shiner St. Paul’s 21-14 victory over their rivals, the Hallettsville Sacred Heart Indians, on Friday gave the Cardinals a playoff berth.
Leading the way or St. Paul was Zak Johnson who rushed 20 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson was also 5-of-6 passing for 89 yards, finding Kai Giese four times for 72 yards and Atley Pilat once for a 17-yard completion. Giese also rushed nine times for 83 yards.
At 2-0 in district, the Cardinals can finish the regular season as the outright district champion with a home game against San Antonio St. Gerard (1-6, 0-2). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles out of playoff contention
With losses to both Goliad and Yoakum this season, the Luling Eagles (0-9, 0-4) are officially out of playoff contention. Luling travels to Hallettsville (3-1 in district) to finish out their football season. The Eagles’ last win was in 2017 against Ingram Moore.

State-ranked Comanches remain unbeaten
With the district title already clinched, the #2 Shiner Comanches (9-0, 3-0) are set to take on a Wallis Brazos Cougars (3-6, 1-2) team trying to make the playoffs. If Brazos is unable to pull off the upset, the Cougars would need Kenedy (5-4, 1-2) to knock off Yorktown (3-6, 0-3) to make the playoffs as the fourth seed. A Yorktown victory, with some help from tiebreakers, could potentially knock Brazos from the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Comanches are locked in as the one seed out of District 15-2ADI.
