Shiner St. Paul opens district play this week

Cardinals escaped with an overtime 31-30 victory over Brentwood Christian after going for the two-point conversion. Carson Reese led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 31 times for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Zak Johnson had seven carries for 49 yards and a score. The team combined for 58 carries for 319 yards.

Late in the game, down 10, the Cardinals came back, scoring a touchdown with 5:09 left, then converting on a 42-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. After giving up a touchdown and an extra-point kick, the Cardinals opted to go for a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown of their own, with Reese converting on the run.

The Cardinals open district play against the Temple Central Texas Christian Lions (4-2). The Lions have been up and down in scoring, averaging 33.3 points per game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Shiner.

Mustangs shut out in district opener

Nixon-Smiley (2-4, 0-1) could not stop #9 Poth (5-1, 1-0) with the Pirates overwhelming the Mustangs 61-0 to open District 15-3ADII. Nixon-Smiley was limited to 75 total yards, all from the ground. The Mustangs fumbled the ball four times, losing it three times. Xavier Arias led the team in rushes, carrying the ball 17 times for 57 yards. On defense, Issac Grant and Bradyn Martinez came away with one interception each. Arias led the team in tackles with four solo and five assisted.

The Mustangs travel to Stockdale to take on their rivals at 7:30 p.m. The Brahmas (1-5, 0-1) are coming off a 31-21 road defeat against Natalia.

Comanches continue dominant win streak

#2 Shiner (7-0, 1-0) added to their win streak, knocking off Yorktown (3-4, 0-1) 71-7 after scoring 64 points in the first half. The Comanches gave up just 62 yards of passing and 88 yards of running the entire game.

The Comanches travel to Weimar for a battle of unbeatens. The Wildcats (7-0, 1-0) are coming off a 40-6 victory over Kenedy. Weimar averages 34.6 points per game. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Eagles lose close in district opener

Luling (0-6, 0-1) lost 28-19 to the Goliad Tigers (1-5, 1-0) to open District 14-3ADI. The Eagles host a tough Edna (4-2, 0-1) team, who lost 35-16 to Hallettsville last week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
