Nixon-Smiley opens district play with state-ranked Pirates

The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs (2-3) come off the bye week facing what could be their toughest opponent in district this Friday. The Mustangs travel to Poth to take on the #10 ranked team in Class 3A Division II. Other than a 16-12 loss against UC Randolph, the Pirates have averaged 40.25 points per game. Last season, Poth blew out Nixon-Smiley 68-0, the Mustangs’ biggest loss of the season.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Cardinals look to bounce back

Shiner St. Paul (3-3) took a 36-17 loss on the road last Friday against Geneva Boerne. The team was penalized nine times for 75 yards and lost one fumble. On the ground, Zak Johnson had 16 carries for 82 yards. Noeh Boedeker had 14 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 17 yards and a receiving touchdown. Quarterback Kai Giese went 6-of-10 for 57 yards passing and a touchdown. Sam Benes went 2-for-2 with extra point kicks. He also converted a 27-yard field goal.

The Cardinals close out non-district play travel to take on Brentwood Christian (6-0). The unbeaten Bears have outscored opponents 219-38. Last season, the Cardinals lost 31-21.

Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Winless Luling begins district play

Luling (0-5) is still in search of their first win since the 2017 season. The Eagles travel to Goliad to take on the Tigers (0-5) who have struggled this season as well. Last year, the Tigers blew out Luling 56-6.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

#2 Comanches continuing win streak

The Shiner Comanches (6-0), ranked second in Class 2A Division I football host Yorktown (3-2) to open District 15-2ADI play. The Comanches are coming off a commanding 63-21 victory over Lexington. Last season, the Comanches won 42-8.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
