The Gonzales Apaches earned their first district win of the season with a 69-59 victory over Poteet.

“It was a big one for us, our first district win as our new team,” head coach Alec Paramski said. “It gives us that confidence to start that win after win after win. It was a huge confidence booster.”

The Apaches’ biggest lead of the night came near the end of the second quarter where the team was up 19 before Poteet scored to make it a 17-point game. Later, the Apaches took a 17-point lead into the fourth quarter, but were unable to put away the Aggies, with Poteet coming within eight points with 2:24 left on the clock.

“I think our kids just got a little comfortable,” Paramski explained. “Poteet played really well in the third quarter. They were really aggressive on their passes. We kind have got complacent. I told them after the game we can’t be complacent and taking these shots that we weren’t taking in the first half.”

“We just got to put a team away when we got a lead like that,” he added.

Once the team settled, the Apaches ended the night with the 10-point victory. Paramski explained that the team needed to attack the basket and draw those fouls, then convert on free throws, in order to continue their success.

“We want to get those high percentage shots,” Paramski said. “I don’t want to rely on the three ball to win games. We got a lot of points in the paint tonight and free throws which helped us seal the deal.”

On Tuesday, the Apaches lost 101-58 against #17 Pleasanton to drop to 1-3 in District 30-4A. Gonzales hosts San Antonio Brooks on Friday before an opening on Tuesday. They then host La Vernia on Friday, Jan. 24.
