With Gonzales city council's approval Thursday afternoon, Gonzales Independent School District will be hosting a community pep rally downtown at Texas Heroes Square that same night for the Gonzales Apaches football team who have advanced to the area round of playoffs.

The Apaches (8-2) are set to take on Lampasas (10-1), the number six team in Class 4ADI, on Friday, Nov. 22 in Pflugerville. But before the game, the coaching staff wanted another way to get their athletes ready for the upcoming game.

“I’ve been a part of communities [where] once you get second, third, fourth round, you’re just looking for something different and this is it,” Gonzales athletic director Mike Waldie said. “We just want to get more people involved, make sure some of the community that’s not heavily tied to the school district might just be able to enjoy it by being downtown eating or driving by and realize, hey, football is still going on and we’d love to have them jump on the bandwagon and come to Austin Friday and enjoy what I think is going to be a really good football game..”

City council held a special called meeting at 12:30 p.m. with two agenda items under “Resolution.” The second item includes authorizing GISD permission to hold the pep rally. The intersections of St. James and St. Louis and St. James and St. Lawrence will be blocked off from 5:45-6:45 p.m. Gonzales PD may close more streets if crowd size requires it.

Other than allowing more community members an opportunity to celebrate with the football team, Waldie wants his athletes to enjoy this playoff run.

“These kids, they work hard,” he said. “Anytime we can give them a chance to enjoy, I think sometimes you get so tied up in the actual game Friday night that you forget to enjoy the moment, and for these seniors, I don’t want this to be their last week, but every second that’s left this season, whether it’s one week or five more weeks, I’m wanting them to soak it in and this is just another thing I hope they have memories from for the rest of their lives. This is a great football town and I hope everybody comes out and makes it just crazy fun Thursday night.”
