Annie Margaret Philippus Menking

Posted

It is with heavy yet grateful hearts that we announce the earthly loss of a very special lady. Annie Margaret Philippus Menking was born in Cost, Texas on Sept. 30, 1918 to Willie Otto Philippus and Myrtle Arizona Hindman Philippus. She graced us with 101 blessed years. It is without a doubt; this lovely woman is being celebrated in a beautiful homecoming in heaven.

The love of her life was Alexander Frederick Menking. They married at the Monthalia Methodist Parsonage on Jan. 16, 1939 and honeymooned in Austin. They made their home together in Monthalia where they lived together for over 66 years. They loved their life in Monthalia, working together and celebrating special times with family and friends. They shared many special memories traveling with other couples on various trips, but especially enjoyed New Mexico. Both were active members of the Monthalia Methodist Church.

Known to many as “Miss Margie” she was a hard and talented worker; rising early to cook for family, taking care of chickens, tending a vegetable garden and multiple flowerbeds and believe it or not, hand washing clothes with a manual ringer. Her talent was most renowned for her magic in the kitchen where she prepared amazing meals-chicken fried steak, chocolate pie, cinnamon rolls and doughnuts to name a few!  She kept an immaculate home filled with love and devotion.

In her elder years, she lived in Austin with Martha and Tim. She loved doing crossword puzzles, cross-stitching, and playing dominoes. She beamed with excitement upon receiving calls, visits and letters from her church, family, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her daughter, Martha and son-in-law Tim Hunke of Austin; Son, Ronnie Menking and daughter-in-law Christina of Cost; Granddaughter Traci and her husband Neil Henze of Monthalia; Grandson Eric Hunke and wife Candy of San Antonio; and three great grandchildren Hannah Margaret Henze, Nathan Henze and Erica Hunke. The family expresses special thanks to Patsy Painter and Linda Brown, and to all of the other women who cared for her over the years.

Visitation will be held Wednesday Jan. 22 from 5-7 p.m. at Seydler Hill.Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at Monthalia United Methodist Church 1926 Co Rd 112, Cost, Texas 78614. Interment will follow at the Monthalia Methodist Cemetery.
