Amanda Dixson signs letter of intent

GONZALES — Normally a letter of intent signing out of Gonzales comes from the boys’ side of athletics. However, in recent years the Lady Apaches have shown that there’s talent there as well and Amanda Dixson is no different.

On Thursday, the all-star basketball player signed her letter of intent to play for Frank Phillips College, a community college located in Borger, Texas.

Dixson wasn’t sure that she’d make it this far, but after her stellar junior year, she believed she can play college basketball.

“I started doing better in games and gaining more experience,” Dixson said. “At first in junior high it was difficult. It’s a long process, [but] after I got in the program I stuck with it.”

Her main message for other athletes who want to get to this position is to stick with the program. It’s nice to get some motivation from others but it all starts from within.

“You got to want this for yourself,” she advised, “not have someone else wanted it for you.”

“I feel very proud of myself,” she added. “I’ve come a long way and I know this doesn’t happen every day in Gonzales, Texas but I’m glad I stuck with it.”

Dixson will go into college studying education to become a teacher. Her goals for her freshman year is to get playing time but most importantly play a role as a member of the team. She thanked coaches Valerie and Benson Akpan for their role throughout the process of signing on with Frank Phillips College.

Frank Phillips College is currently in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I. They compete in Region 5 with colleges such as Cisco, Clarendon, Collin County, Hill, Howard (TX), McLennan, Midland, New Mexico, Odessa, Ranger, South Plains, Southwestern Christian, Temple, Weatherford and Western Texas. Last season the team went 13-15, but as of press time they are currently 12-2.
