Allen Carl Wehlmann, 86, of Victoria, formerly of Gonzales, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016.  Allen was born August 22, 1929 in Victoria to Gus Frank Wehlmann and Frances Faltesek Wehlmann.  He graduated from Patty Welder High School in Victoria with the Class of 1948.  Allen married Hattie Marie Urban on December 28, 1950 in Victoria.  He was a member of the Gonzales First Lutheran Church, a life member of the Gonzales Elk Lodge, B.P.O.E., the Gonzales VFW Post 4817, the Gonzales I.O.O.F., and the Gonzales Noon Lions Club.

After high school Allen enlisted in the U.S.A.F. and served as a Staff Sergeant in munitions supply during the Korean War.  True to Allen’s fun loving character he would thump an atomic bomb like he was thumping a melon each day as he passed through the arsenal. After being honorably discharged he returned to Victoria and worked for J.C. Penney.  He was moved to Beaumont to manage a J.C. Penney store before moving again to manage the J.C. Penney store in Gonzales.  After leaving J.C. Penney he became part owner of Schwarz Motor Company, a Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge dealership in Gonzales.  After retiring he purchased D&D Liquor Store just to keep busy and he ran this operation for 19 years.

Allen enjoyed fishing, barbequing, fish fries, tending his cows and first and foremost he enjoyed time with his grandchildren.  He was a sociable man; Allen loved people and delighted in sparking up conversations wherever he was, especially the grocery store.  He had an excellent sense of humor and loved to laugh.  He enjoyed watching his beloved Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.  He imparted his strong work ethic into his children and his belief in putting God first then family.  He charged his children to always do the right thing, to accept responsibility and to work hard.  He enjoyed his oversized garden and delighted in giving most of the produce away.  Allen was a superb outdoor chef; his ribs, chicken and sausage are legendary with those that were blessed to partake in his barbeque.  Allen will be remembered as a kind, cheerful man, a man that loved because he knew that the “greatest of these is love.”

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Martin Hill of Victoria, son and daughter-in-law, Steven A. Wehlmann, Sr. and Jane of Cuero, brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Esther Wehlmann of Victoria, sister-in-law, Aileen Lott of Victoria, grandchildren, Steven Wehlmann (Belinda), Wesley Wehlmann (Lisa), Greg Hill (Nikki) and Danielle Hill and 15 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, son, Ronnie “Rondo” Wehlmann, daughter, Pam Powell and son-in-law, Dwaine Powell.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Pastor Ildiko Rigney officiating.  Interment will follow in Hermann Sons Cemetery in Gonzales.  Pallbearers:  Steven Wehlmann, Sr., Wesley Wehlmann, Tyler Wehlmann, Greg Hill, Steve May, and Darrell Wehlmann.  Honorary pallbearers:  his great-grandchildren, Sodalis Caregivers, and Denise Whipple.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Gonzales 1st Lutheran Church, the Gonzales Elks Lodge, or the charity of one’s choice.  Services are under the care and direction of Seydler-Hill Funeral Home.
