Abbie C. “June” O’Neal Jr., 89, of Gonzales, formally of Smiley went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 24. He was born on September 19, 1929 in Rogers, Texas to Abbie C. O’Neal Sr. and Lois Beatrice McGee O’Neal. He honorably served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1951. He delighted in telling stories of his time while he was stationed in Alaska. On January 26, 1952 he married Molly B. Hermes of Cuero.

June was a hardworking man. He was a welder, truck driver, he operated service stations in Nixon and Smiley and a tire repair shop in Gonzales before retiring in 1991. After his retirement he enjoyed cultivating his large garden, fishing with his grandchildren on Sandies and Elm Creeks. After moving to Gonzales, he would have small gardens and fish the banks of the Guadalupe River.

He enjoyed listening to country music, watching the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers. He enjoyed his visits with Brother Clint Lowery where they discussed fishing on the Gulf Coast, Sandies Creek and gardening. June was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

June is survived by his wife of 67 years, Molly O’Neal, daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and James White, son, Mark O’Neal all of Gonzales, grandchildren, Kristen Reid (Jimmy), Barry White (Kristen) and Sarah O’Neal, great-grandchildren, Danielle Long, Mason Long, Seth and Abigail Reid, his uncle Harold McGee, aunts, Eunice Arnold and Evelyn Mutchler and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, grandparents, Henry and Beulah McGee, A.W. and Margaret O’Neal and step-grandmother, Birdie O’Neal.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26 in Seydler-Hill Funeral Home with Rev. Clint Lowery officiating. Interment will follow in Bundick Cemetery in Smiley. Pallbearers: Barry White, Jimmy Reid, Mason Long, Seth Reid, Kenneth Stewart and David Stewart. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, April 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. Friends may leave their condolences to the family by visiting www.seydlerhillfuneralhome.com.
