A hero's welcome home

U.S. Army Master Sgt. Charlie Mares was returned home last week, with a full military burial in Cistern at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church on Friday. The soldier was escorted by a military honor guard and received a 21-gun salute. Afterwards, family and those paying their respects enjoyed a barbecue lunch at the church hall. Mares was killed in action in Korea on July 31, 1950 and his unidentified remains were buried in Hawaii for decades until recent DNA testing revealed his identity. More photos from the burial are available online at gonzalesinquirer.com.
