12th annual barn sale returns to Gonzales

Rusted Gingham’s annual Barn Sale returns to J.B. Wells Park this weekend for its 12th year. The two-day thrifting event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2.

What initially began as a local sale in a barn near Monthalia has since blossomed into a two-day event at the J.B. Wells Show Barn with vendors from all across Texas. According to event coordinator Suzanne Sexton, over 70 vintage, handmade, remade, antique and art vendors will be at the show barn this weekend. Though the event has undergone changes since its founding, Sexton has no interest in allowing the sale to lose its barn roots.

“A lot of people have asked ‘why don’t you move it to the (J.B. Wells) Expo Center and expand and make it bigger?’ but to keep the feel of it—because it just has its own unique feel—we want to keep it centralized, in one area, so we use the show barn,” Sexton said.

On top of the vintage and antique selection, there will also be live music, food and drinks for sale. Americana country artist Matthew Butter will perform Friday, while Christian rock artist Wayne Kerr plays Saturday. The Gonzales County A&M Club and Gonzales County 4-H will be selling concessions.

“(The A&M Club) does tamale sales, which right now they’re actually doing pre-orders for a few more days,” Sexton said. “So, that’s their scholarship fundraiser, so people come with the anticipation of helping them out and buying tamales, chili, Frito pie, that sort of thing.”

Sexton said typical patrons of the sale range from those looking to get a head start on Christmas shopping to newlyweds looking for home decor to begin a new chapter of their lives. Whatever the reason for attending, the barn sale has grown into a destination event for visitors across the region.

“Gonzales is so centrally located to so many big towns, and so what we’ve seen over the years is that we have amazing groups that will meet at the barn sale,” Sexton said. “Ladies will come, we got some from Austin, from Corpus, Victoria and they come and make a weekend of it now.”

Admission is free for children 12 and under, $3 for everybody else. Parking for the event is free.
