UIL releases division, classification cutoffs

Last Friday, Nov. 20, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) released their reclassification and realignment conference cutoff numbers. Though not much changes for Gonzales County teams in terms of which conference they land, the Gonzales Apaches look as though they’ll be headed down a division for the football season, dropping from 4A Division I to 4A Division II.

During the last realignment, UIL split it where 4ADI included schools of enrollment 686-1059 and 4ADII had enrollment of 465-685. Gonzales’ enrollment was at 695, making them fourth smallest school in the division.

In comparison, the Apaches matched up twice in the playoffs against powerhouse Liberty Hill who was one of the biggest schools in the division.

These next two years, UIL has made 4ADII a division with enrollment numbers from 480-722. Gonzales’ enrollment from 2014-2015 was 687, making it likely that the Apaches will drop to 4ADII to reignite district rivalries with the Cuero Gobblers and the Yoakum Bulldogs.

On an interesting note, Liberty Hill barely made the cut for 4ADI, with their enrollment number at 1090.5, just underneath the new 723-1099 cutoff for that division.

Nixon-Smiley is still expected to be in Class 3A Division II while the Waelder Wildcats are still without a football team.

In non-football sports, Gonzales remains a 4A school, Nixon-Smiley a 3A and Waelder a 1A.
