After suffering a huge district loss last week to Karnes City, the Nixon-Smiley baseball team turned things around, winning two games this week against Pettus and district rival Poth.

The Mustangs blew out Pettus in their first game of the week, 13-3.

After a scoreless first inning, the Mustangs scored in the remaining innings, putting away the Eagles in five innings. Nixon-Smiley had a combined 10 hits, with seven different batters registering RBIs. Winning pitcher Diego Pompa pitched 3-1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs in the fourth frame, two strikeouts and five walks. Raul Tovar took over and gave up two hits and recorded a strikeout.

Tovar continued his success the following night against Poth, pitching a complete game in an 11-7 win. The Mustang hurler gave up five earned runs with eight hits and three walks while also throwing five strikeouts.

Although the Mustangs scored early in the game with two runs in the second inning, the Pirates scored a run in the fourth to keep the game close at 2-1.

The fun began in the sixth inning when Poth scored five times for a 6-2 lead before Nixon-Smiley exploded with nine runs of its own to retake the lead at 11-6. In the final inning, Poth managed to score only once, clinching the important district victory for the Mustangs, despite seven Nixon-Smiley errors.

The Mustangs travel to Schulenburg tonight for another district game.
