Lady Comanches sweep Ganado

With just one match left in the regular season, the Shiner volleyball team has been playing a game of “keeping up with the Joneses.”

In this case, the “Joneses” happen to be Weimar, who shares the District 26-A lead with the Lady Comanches going into tonight’s regular season finales. Shiner (24-14, 10-1 in 26-A) kept its hopes for a district championship alive with a 3-0 victory at Ganado by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-17.

If the Lady Comanches win at home against Waelder tonight and Weimar wins its finale against Prairie Lea, the teams would finish with a district co-championship, but would need either a coin toss or a tiebreaking match to determine who gets the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the Class A state playoffs. Shiner hosts Waelder at 6 p.m. today at Shiner High School.

In Friday’s win over Ganado, Amanise Coleman (team-high 6 blocks, 7 kills, 2 digs, 2 assists), LaNeshia Hunt (team-high 15 kills, team-high 4 aces, 14 digs, block, assist), Lauren Oden (team-high 16 digs, 5 kills, 2 aces, 2 assists, block), Julianna Rankin (team-high 4 aces, 7 kills, 2 digs, 2 blocks) and Kristin Schacherl (team-high 32 assists, 8 digs) led the way for the Lady Comanches. Emmalie Berkovsky (ace, dig), Tabitha Blaschke (5 kills, 2 blocks) and Meagan Chumchal (13 digs) also contributed.

Giddings 3, Gonzales 0

Giddings handed Gonzales a 3-0 loss during the Lady Apaches’ home finale Friday at Gonzales High School. The scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.

Friday’s match was the final home match for six Gonzales seniors. Lindsey Akers, Carly Bozka, Kiley Braune, Allison Raley and Morgan Simper all played the final home matches of their careers, while Shayla Simper sat out with an ankle injury sustained last week in the Lady Apaches’ 3-1 loss to Cuero.

Raley led the way for Gonzales (10-24, 1-8 in 26-3A) with team-highs in kills (5) and blocks (3) to go with 16 digs. Akers (5 kills), Bozka (22 digs), Braune (14 assists) and Cassidy LaFleur (3 aces) also led for the Lady Apaches.

Gonzales concludes the 2012 season at Smithville at 7 p.m. today at Smithville High School.

Hallettsville strengthened its playoff positioning with a 3-1 win over Nixon-Smiley Saturday at Hallettsville High School. The scores were 25-12, 7-25, 25-18, 25-21.
