A trio of Gonzales football players were named to the Associated Press' Class 3A all-state team on Tuesday.

Senior running back Cecil Johnson, junior linebacker J.T. Miller and senior free safety Zack Lopez all earned spots on the all-state team. Johnson and Miller were first teamers, while Lopez was on the second team.

The Apaches' offense was based on Johnson's production as he carved through opposing defenses to the tune of 2,016 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2012 in just nine games. Johnson also earned all-state honors last year as he ran for 1,701 yards and 14 scores to give him 3,717 yards and 39 touchdowns in his two-year career.

Miller also is a two-time all-stater, however, he played defensive end a year ago before moving to inside linebacker. The move paid off as Miller recorded 142 total tackles, including 18 for losses.

Lopez, like Johnson and Miller, also was an all-state player last season. He provided solid leadership and numerous tackles this season before an ankle injury sidelined him for most of the last two games — losses to Cuero and Smithville, respectively.

Gonzales finished the season 6-4 and was one win away from a playoff berth. The Apaches finished in a fourth-place tie with Smithville in the District 26-3A standings as both teams had 2-3 league records.

Shiner also had a pair of players named to the AP Class A all-state team. Junior linebacker Jacob Stafford and junior punter Hunter Mraz were the Comanches selected to the all-state team as Stafford was a second-team pick and Mraz was honorable mention.

Shiner advanced to the state semifinals before bowing out to Mart, 42-7, on Friday. The Comanches finished 12-2.
