Gonzales County cowhands with mixed results during first go

GONZALES — The Texas Youth Rodeo Association’s (TYRA) finals have been rolling along with many of Gonzales County’s athletes having some success during their first go of the competition.

One of the top point getters was Gonzales’ Sadie Thibodeaux who has qualified to compete in five different events this week. Her top score was in Wednesday’s figure-eight run where she was timed at 9.208 seconds to take third, trailing two Orange Grove athletes in Acey Pinkston with 8.709 seconds and Eryn Ellis with 9.166 seconds.

Thibodeaux also took eighth with Shiner’s Trace Herndon in ribbon roping with their time of 9.5 seconds. Right above them were Charlotte’s Serah Kate Blair and Sandia’s Coleman King at 9.030 seconds, good for sixth, and Needville’s Connor Atkinson and Sweeny’s Paisley Pierce at 9.430 seconds, good for seventh.

Thibodeaux took 13th in goat tying with her time of 12.160 seconds. In 10th was Pierce with 11.020 seconds.

She no timed in girls’ breakaway on Tuesday and in the junior poles on Wednesday.

Younger sister Audrey Thibodeaux also participated in a handful of events, all of which were on Wednesday night.

Thibodeaux took 12th in the sub-junior figure eight event with her time of 10.588 seconds, behind Falfurrias’ Ryan Garza who took 10th at 9.908 seconds and Utopia’s Jett Smothers who didn’t score but took 11th at 9.998 seconds. She also took 14th at the poles with a time of 29.020 seconds, where Paige’s Mattie-Cash Mueller 10th-place finish was time at 27.052 seconds.

Thibodeaux was barely edged out in cloverleaf, taking 11th with a time of 18.616 seconds behind Rockdale’s Kathryn Pesl at 18.554 seconds.

Nixon’s Brooke Hester no timed in senior girls’ breakaway and team roping while Nixon’s Miles Svoboda no timed in steer wrestling.

The second go runs through Friday before the final performances on Saturday, all at J.B. Wells Arena.
