Gonzales area finalists advance to regional meet

LA VERNIA — The Lady Apaches track season continue on as five of the eight athletes that competed in the area meet will move on to regionals, with three medaling in their events.

Ericka Hernandez took home two first place medals, one in the discus toss and the other in shot put. In the discus, Hernandez had a toss of 142 feet, 4 inches. She beat out Wimberley’s Mattie Adams who had a toss of 113. Salado’s Brittany Vrooman took third with her toss of 110-11.

In the shot put, Hernandez’s toss of 43-07 ¾ was good for first. Right behind her was Lady Apache Keaundra Cray who will advance to the regional meet with her second-place toss of 39-3 ¼. They beat out Yoakum’s Rhyleigh Johnson who had a distance of 35-2 ¼.

Molly Barnick also came home with a gold medal, taking first in the high jump with her jump of 5 feet.

Other regional qualifiers include Shania Lloyd who placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.99 seconds. Taylor’s Virginia Kerley took first at 11.85, La Vernia’s Peyton Ford at second with 12.59 and Cuero’s Shanice Nelson at third with 12.88. Lloyd edged out Canyon Lake’s Alysha Perez who finished at 13.09.

In long-distance running, Haley Garza qualified for the regional meet as well as she finished her 1600-meter run in fourth with her time of 5:53.29. Liberty Hill’s Danielle Rimann and Mckynzie King took first and second with their time of 5:22.19 and 5:25.99, respectively. Navarro’s Ivy Kohl took third with her time of 5:40.26.

Ashleigh Haub made it to the area meet but wasn’t able to qualify for regionals as she took sixth in pole vault with her climb of 9 feet. Blanca Hernandez placed seventh in the 800-meter run with her time of 2:42.42. In the 300-meter hurdles, Hannah Rowland placed eighth with her time of 53.22.

Gonzales will send five athletes to compete in six events to the regional meet this week at Javelina Stadium at Texas A&M University Kingsville. The meet runs from April 29-30.
