Just a call or e-mail away

In the last column I wrote, I mentioned that I love what I do.

I love going out to athletic events in all sports. It’s a lot of fun to do what I do.

While I go to as many athletic events as I can, I simply cannot be at every game, meet, match or tournament. I cover athletics at five schools — four of which have baseball and softball, and all five have track and field, tennis and golf.

I’m writing today not to complain, but to ask for help. As a one-man sports department, I need it.

Every Tuesday and Friday, you will find me at a softball or baseball game. But bear in mind that Gonzales, Nixon-Smiley, St. Paul and Shiner all have baseball and softball teams so it is impossible for me to cover games at all four places in one night.

If I am not visible at a game, chances are I was not there. If I am not visible at a baseball or softball game — or a track and field meet, a tennis match or a golf tournament — please feel free to call or e-mail me with the results.

My e-mail address is sports@gonzalesinquirer.com and the office number is (830) 672-2861. If I’m not in the office when a phone call is made, a message will be taken for me.

In an effort to balance coverage, I stayed up until 3 a.m. a couple of weeks ago typing a schedule of places where I will be on Tuesday and Fridays. I also put in the schedule when the district track and field meets, tennis matches and golf tournaments will take place so I will be able to attend as many of those as I can.

Most of the time when I cover baseball or softball games, I get to — as the old saying goes — kill two birds with one stone. I can walk back-and-forth to take pictures of the baseball and softball games as they happen as I did in Shiner on March 13 or in Luling Tuesday when Nixon-Smiley’s baseball and softball teams played there.

I love being able to do that because I get to be at two games instead of just one. Plus, it gives me an opportunity to balance baseball and softball coverage.

This is intended for all coaches, fans, readers and even athletes. I want the results of every game, meet, match and tournament via e-mail, phone call or office visit.

Your support will be deeply appreciated, and always remember that I love what I do.
