The Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs committed too many errors on the field and on the base path Thursday, and the result was a 14-3 loss to the visiting Karnes City Lady Badgers.

The Lady Mustangs tried mightily to keep up with the Lady Badgers’ scoring. but simply couldn’t. After giving up five runs in the second and third inning, Nixon-Smiley finally answered in its half of the third.

Alena Alvarez started off the inning with a double. An error in the Karnes City outfield allowed Alvarez to take third base. Jordan Newman then drove her in with an RBI single before she was caught stealing second base. Miranda Carrilo followed with a single, but more errors in the outfield allowed her to advance to third base. Whitley Gonzales got aboard with a base on balls, and Mikayla Vasquez drove in the second Lady Mustang run with a base knock. But a double play ended the Nixon-Smiley threat, and Karnes City owned a 5-2 edge.

The Lady Badgers extended their lead to 8-2 in the fourth and fifth innings, until the Lady Mustangs answered to cut into the lead. Newman got on base via a Karnes City error, and ended up crossing home plate later on an Abby Scarbrough RBI single. But the Lady Mustangs were unable to score again, leaving the inning down 8-3.

Karnes City then exploded with a six-run inning to put the game well out of reach for the Lady Mustangs. Nixon-Smiley failed to score down the stretch, and suffered the 14-3 setback.

The Lady Mustangs ended the game with six hits while giving up a whopping seven errors.

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Poth Friday, but could only muster a lone hit on two Poth errors, as Poth rang up 12 hits and capitalized on four Nixon-Smiley errors. The Lady Pirates needed only four innings to post a 16-1 victory.
