The Gonzales Apaches are geared up for its first playoff game of the 2010-11 season tonight when they face Hondo in Converse.
Gonzales (19-11) will have to go through state ranked Hondo (25-5) tonight at 7 p.m. for class 3A bidistrict at Wagner High School.
Hondo, ranked 19th in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, is coming off of a 2-loss league season in District 27-3A before finishing as the runner-up.
Gonzales suffered back-to-back losses in its District 28-3A start to Pleasanton and Sam Houston. But the Apaches bounced back and polished off 4-straight to stay in playoff contention.
In the second round of league play, Gonzales took both Pleasanton and Sam Houston to the limit, only losing to the co-leaders by four points in each of the losses including a double OT loss to the Hurricanes.
Senior Mark Hastings leads the Apaches in scoring averaging 18.4 points per game followed by junior guard Jon Anthony Casares averaging 13 points per game. Kedrick Cray averages 12.5 points per game.
Hondo’s only losses were to Carrizo Springs and Somerset in 27-3A. Somerset became the eventual district champions.
The Owls are led by senior Chase Gardenhire and junior Jason Gentry each averaging 14.4 points per game.
