SCHERTZ – The Waelder boys’ basketball season came to an abrupt, yet hard-fought, halt Friday night in the Class A area playoffs, as the Wildcats dropped a 51-48 verdict to a tough D’Hanis team.

D’Hanis was on a roll, having won 10 of its last 11 games before coming into the tournament and eliminating Waelder.

The Wildcats were down early, ending the first quarter behind 22-12 to the Cowboys. Fortunately, Waelder came roaring back on a 17-6 run to end the first half with a one-point lead.

With the score 29-28, Waelder relinquished the lead to D’Hanis to end the third quarter with the score in favor of the Cowboys, 41-36. Trying to mount a comeback, Waelder did not have enough to turn back D’Hanis, losing by a mere three points.

The game’s top two scorers came from the Waelder’s side of the court. Clay Orona led the game with 15 points, while Jeremy Gonzales had 13 points as well. As for the Cowboys, Antonio Dunfee was their leading scorer with 12, while both Nathan Young and Clint Rothe scored 10 each for D’Hanis.
