SHINER — This one was never close.

The Shiner girls basketball team scored early and often Thursday in a 74-26 rout of Hawkins at Shiner High School. Each of the nine players who suited up for the Lady Comanches Thursday night scored at least one point.

“This was a good game going into the break and it gave us a lot of confidence,” Shiner coach John Hoelter said. “It also was a good team win. Everyone on the team scored and we had balanced scoring.”

Shiner (14-5) scored the game’s first 14 points and did not surrender a point until the 3:31 mark of the first quarter when Hawkins got its first point off of a free throw. The Lady Wolfpack also hit its first field goal with 1:52 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Lady Comanches led 23-4 at the end of the first quarter. Kristin Schacherl scored 8 points in the period, while Amanise Coleman, LaNeshia Hunt and Lauren Oden all had 5 in the first eight minutes.

Things slowed down a little in the second quarter as Shiner outscored Hawkins, 11-5, in the period to take a 34-9 lead at halftime. Shamyra Coleman scored 4 points in the second quarter, and finished the game with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

“I looked for open spots on the floor and also went up strong for rebounds,” Coleman said.

The pace picked up a little for the Lady Comanches in the third quarter as they outscored the Lady Wolfpack, 19-9, to take a 53-18 lead into the final period. Hannah Koenning heated up with 11 points in the third thanks to a pair of free throws and a trio of 3-pointers, while Schacherl had 6 points in the period.

“I hit 3-pointers in our first game against Hawkins (a 58-24 win Nov. 10) and I felt hot from behind the arc,” Koenning said.

Koenning also had a little added motivation on Thursday. That’s when her friend, Matt Pohler, returned home for the first time since Nov. 13 — the day he was diagnosed with Leukemia.

“Just knowing that Matt came home really added a little extra fuel to the fire,” Koenning said.

Pohler graduated from Shiner in May, and was a three-sport star in baseball, boys basketball and golf. He was scheduled to play golf for Houston-Victoria before his diagnosis.

“The whole town of Shiner is happy that Matt is home,” Schacherl said.

Shiner finished the game on a 21-8 run in the fourth quarter. Hunt scored 8 of her 15 points in the fourth, while Schacherl and Shamyra Coleman both had 4 in the period.

Schacherl led the way with team-highs in points (18) and steals (4) with most of her points coming off of offensive rebounds (5). She also shared the steals lead with Hunt and Amanise Coleman.

“I was just going for the ball,” Schacherl said. “I just have fun when I’m playing. I don’t get all uptight.”

In addition to scoring 15 points and sharing the steals lead, Hunt also led with four assists. Koenning finished with 12 points as well and Oden led with three blocks.

Shiner hosts the Shiner Tournament Friday and Saturday in Shiner.
