Mustangs rout Karnes City

KARNES CITY – The Nixon-Smiley Mustangs dug themselves a hole too deep for them to get out of Tuesday, as Karnes City buried the Mustangs, 16-4.

After a scoreless first inning for the Mustangs, the Badgers exploded with 10 runs, subsequently running away with the game and never looking back. Mustang starting pitcher Raul Tovar gave up seven hits and nine earned runs in the opening stanza before relinquishing the mound. In the second inning, Nixon-Smiley went with Nick Pena, who had better luck, giving up only one earned run and four hits while throwing one strikeout.

The rest of the game looked bleak at best, as Karnes City scored in each of the next three innings, while Nixon-Smiley could only manage one run during the same period. Down 16-1 in the fifth and final inning, the Mustangs did all they could to muster a miracle comeback, but their three scores were not enough and the verdict was determined.

Nixon-Smiley (4-5) hosts Luling today at 4:30 p.m. with hopes of reversing its fortunes and the opportunity to get back to .500 for the season.
