Hunt state bound

Gonzales senior Marlena Hunt is state bound for the second consecutive year after finishing in first place in the triple jump at the Region IV class 3A meet at Phil Danaher Stadium in Corpus Christi Calallen this week.

Hunt edged Tashona Williams of Sam Houston with a leap of 36 feet, 6-1/2 inches for gold. Williams, who also qualified for state, placed second with a leap of 36 feet, 4 inches.

The UIL State meet will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on the campus of the University of Texas.

Hunt leaped a foot further than her District 28-3A finish for second place. Then, Williams out-leaped Hunt in a battle for first place at the district meet to qualify for regionals.

Senior Tammashay Jefferson missed qualifying for state in the shot put after finishing in third place.

Jefferson heaved the shot put 38 feet, 2-1/2 inches for third behind Hayley Grosjean of Rockport-Fulton, who qualified for state at second place 39 feet, 1-1/4 inches.

Hunt finished fifth place in state last year with a leap of 35 feet, 9-3/4 inches.
