Apaches bow to Buffaloes, 11-3

The Apaches baseball team just couldn’t get enough hits Saturday, finishing on the short end of an 11-3 score against Giddings.

Great pitching on both sides of the innings highlighted the first three innings. Apache batters combined for six strikeouts during that early span, while Gonzales pitcher Tyler Janota threw three strikeouts in those same innings.

It wasn’t until the fourth frame before the teams began to score runs. With two runners aboard for the Buffaloes on a double and a single, Gonzales wasn’t able to corral a fly ball to the outfield, allowing the first Giddings run. With two outs and two runners aboard, Janota walked a batter and hit a batter to overload the bases to give Giddings a 2-0 lead.

The fifth frame was filled with more scoring for the Buffaloes. With the bases loaded, Aaron Gayton came on in relief of Janota and struck out the first Giddings batter he faced. But back-to-back RBI singles scored three runs for the Buffaloes before Gayton stopped the bleeding with a strikeout.

But the Apaches could not answer to cut into the 5-0 deficit.

Giddings add to runs in the sixth stanza before the Apaches could get on the board.

Gayton took advantage of multiple Buffalo errors and wild pitches to score the first Apache run of the day. Devin Benes then got the first Gonzales hit with a shot to left field for a double, before being stranded.

The Buffaloes put across four more runs in the seventh inning for an 11-1 lead, before the Apaches mounted one last rally.

Janota drew a base on balls and Jefry Walshak singled before Brant Philippus rang up an RBI double to score Janota. Gayton followed with an RBI single to plate Walshak, but the Apaches couldn’t keep it going, bowing out at 11-3.

The Apaches struggled at the plate, recording only four hits, all in the final two innings. Gonzales batters suffered 15 strikeouts, while the Apache fielding showed promise with only two errors.

Gonzales travels to Yoakum Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
