Vernon Earl “Buddy” Schrader passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, with his wife Barbara by his side.

He was born in 1936 near Gonzales, Texas, the youngest of three children of Charlie and Gladys Schrader. Buddy graduated from Gonzales High School where he was a member of the Apache football team. He was named All South Texas and All Central Texas center and linebacker.

He received a football scholarship to Trinity University in San Antonio and served as captain of the team in 1957. He graduated in 1958 with a B.S. degree and received a commission in the ROTC program. In 1961 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve as a first lieutenant.

Buddy spent 35 years with Luby’s, Inc., retiring in 1994 as Vice-President of Operations/Marketing. While with Luby’s, he received a Presidential Citation from Ronald Reagan for his work in Nancy Reagan’s Drug Education program.

Buddy, wife Barbara and son Ryan moved in 1994 to Horseshoe Bay where Buddy was an avid golfer and a founder and president of the Hill Country Men’s Golf Association. He was past president of the Horseshoe Bay Property Owners Association, served on the Llano County Tax Appraisal Review Board and was on the Board of Directors of CASA.

Buddy was elected in 2005 as a member of the first Horseshoe Bay City Council. In 2010, he was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to a six-year term on the LCRA Board of Directors. Buddy’s belief in hard work, high standards and dedication to family and friends is reflected in his autobiography, Blessings from the Good Earth which published in 2009.

Buddy was preceded in death by wife Velma and brother Clif.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, sister Virgie Van Kleef (Jeff), daughter Kim Parham (Mike), daughter Sherri, son Mac and beloved step-children; Trey, Ryan, and Brandy (Ronnie), grandchildren Charlie (Alissa), Kevin (Jen), Elizabeth and Katherine (Thomas), great grandson Collin, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

A funeral service is to be held at The Church at Horseshoe Bay on Thursday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. (600 Hi Ridge Rd., HSB, Texas 78657)
