Mrs. Velma Nonmacher Johnson died at the Heights of Gonzales Nursing Home on Dec. 24 in Gonzales, Texas at the age of 95.

Cremation Rites are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Flatonia, Texas. A memorial service will be held on Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Tim Wooten officiating. The family will greet family and friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home.

Velma was born on March 30, 1921 in Yorktown, Texas to Otto and Lillie (Gendke) Nonmacher. Velma graduated from Waelder High School and worked at the Flatonia Argus as a Linotypist after graduating. She married James Glyn Johnson on May 11, 1941. Velma was a homemaker for many years before working in their family business from the 1950s to the 1970s at the Dairy Heart in Flatonia, Texas. She was an American Legion Auxiliary officer as well as serving on the PTA for many years. She was a Canasta Club member, she enjoyed playing softball, and she enjoyed all sorts of games including dominoes, cards and Scrabble. She was a puzzle solver both picture and crossword. Walking was another favorite pastime that she enjoyed up into her 90s; one time reaching her goal of walking from Flatonia to Waelder when she was in her late 60s. She was an accomplished creative seamstress making beautiful clothes for her family. Her soft and gentle ways touched many people setting an example of being a loving peacemaker. Velma was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation of [Luling/Lockhart].

Velma is survived by her children, Doris Cooper and husband Carl of Waelder, Texas, Jimmy Johnson and wife Patty of Waelder, Texas, Amy Sommerlatte and husband Milton of Luling, Texas, twin sister Selma Krametbauer, eight grandchildren: Brenda Johnson Davis and husband John, Shane Cooper and wife Jodi, Duane Johnson and wife Gail, Lori Cooper West and husband Dave, James Glyn Jimmy Johnson and wife Niki, Raven Gaines Grogan and husband Justin, Emile Sommerlatte and Al Sommerlatte, 11 great-grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, two step great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Velma is preceded in death by her husband James Glyn Johnson, baby son Don Ellis, brother Edmond Nonmacher and sister Gladys Humphries.
