Rudy Marek Jr. passed away March 27. Born in Gonzales, TX October 29, 1929 (the day the stock market crashed) to Vlasta (Barta) and Rudolph Marek Sr. growing up in the Oak Forest / Monthalia area.

After graduation from Gonzales High School, he joined the US Air Force and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska – a far cry from hot summers on the farm. He has fond memories of his days in Alaska, but Texas called him home. He returned to get his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from The Southwest Texas State Teachers College – now Texas State. Upon graduation, he met the love of his life, Kirby Hirsch, and would have celebrated 60 years together on April 27. In his long career, Rudy worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife, Southwest Research Institute, Knights of Columbus, and in chemical sales. He and Kirby settled in LaPorte, Texas raising their 4 children there.

Rudy became a 4th Degree Knight and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5232 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in LaPorte, and was proud to have served as Grand Knight.

After retirement, Rudy and Kirby moved back home to the Texas Hill Country and reconnected with old friends. He loved his bluebonnets and lake views. He loved his grandchildren and they were his pride and joy.

He was a loving man and will be missed by Kirby; son Jeff Marek (Mila Funda); daughters Karen (Faron Daigle), Jill (Howard Hughes, Jr), Kelly (Gene Bartkiewicz); grandchildren Hannah and Howdy (Hughes), Sophie and Kristin (Bartkiewicz); sister Martha Ehrig and family.

Rudy donated his body to UTSA Health Science Center. Special thanks to Hope Hospice of New Braunfels for their support. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
