Eloise “Sandi” (Sanchez) Basquez, 79, of Gonzales, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016. She was born on Sunday, July 25, 1937, in Yoakum, Texas, to Geronimo and Celia (Ortega) Sanchez. She was the oldest of nine children, and started working at an early age.

Sandi, as she was well known by her friends and loved ones, had a love of flowers, gardening, and birds. You could always catch her out in the yard tending to her many flower and vegetable gardens, as well as feeding and watering the birds. She had a way with mother nature.

She worked for Gonzales ISD, and later was a caregiver, babysitter, and housekeeper for numerous families in the Gonzales area. Sandi survived cancer twice, and always said God had other plans for her. She found that out after her youngest grandchild was born in 2013. She loved helping raise her grandchildren, and loved them dearly, as they did her. They all have many fond memories of their Nana, from chauffeuring them around everywhere in her little green car, to reading and singing, as well as picnics on the porch.

Sandi was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David Sanchez and Ernest Sanchez; brother-in-law, Lupe Caballero; and sister-in-law, Margaret Sanchez. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Chad Basquez and wife Melissa (Fogle) Basquez of Yoakum; step-daughter, Kookie (Basquez) Buice and husband Calvin of Nashville, Arkansas; step-son, John Basquez and wife Patricia of Luling; three grandchildren, Dustin Basquez of Gonzales, and Neally and Garrett Basquez of Yoakum, as well as step-grandchildren; three sisters, Rachel Caballero of Austin; Mary Helen Molina and husband Frank of Yoakum; and Irene Coldewey and husband Charles of Hallettsville; three brothers, Joe Sanchez of Port Lavaca; Ramon Sanchez of Yoakum; and Carlos (Dorothy) Sanchez of Yoakum; two aunts, Rosa Ayala (93) of San Antonio and Leonar Leal (95) of Sterling City; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, other loving family and treasured friends. Private memorial service for Sandi was held at First United Methodist Church in Cuero, Texas on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Donna Martin and Rev. Bill Cotman presiding.
