Shirley Ruth Crogan, 77, of Ottine, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 11, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shirley was born on March 29, 1935, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She married Howard (Tom) Crogan and spent many years in Panama working for the Panama railroad. Returning to the U.S. around 1975, Shirley and Tom took up residence in Ottine.

Shirley worked for the Postal Service as a relief postal worker until becoming Postmaster at Ottine. When the Ottine Post Office closed, she was transferred to Wrightsboro Post Office where she retired later in 2010. Shirley was a very generous, loving person. Upon her passing, she gave the Ottine Fire Department and Palmetto State Park her land. She had numerous friends in the community that will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil F. Ellis and Amy F. Downs/Ellis, and her husband Tom.

She is surved by her brother and his wife, Fred Ellis and Marie, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; nieces Cherie Dellinger and Jeanie Dubois; nephews Mike, Robin, Shawn and Jay; and step-sons Walter, Thomas and Howard.

A memorial service with friends and fellow workers will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Palmetto State Park Pavilion. Please come and bring a covered dish if you can; meat and drinks will be provided. See you there to commemorate a sassy lady.
