Schroeder, Schurig retain Council seats

District 1 Councilman Gary Schroeder and District 2 Councilman Tommy Schurig will remain on the Gonzales City Council another two years without an election.

The two councilmen were seeking re-election, both for a third term. But when neither drew an opponent, the City Council at its Tuesday night monthly meeting canceled the scheduled May 11 election.

This is the second consecutive election in which the two councilmen have not been challenged.

Schroeder won election to the City Council in May 2009. Schurig was appointed to the unexpired term of Russell Grant in February 2010 when Grant resigned after being indicted for voter fraud. Schurig had finished second to Grant in the 2009 election.
