City Council changes its meeting time

After two years of serving Nixon as its city administrator, George Blanch has decided to bid the city adieu.

Blanch announced his retirement after an executive session during Nixon’s monthly city council meeting Monday.

“I’ve decided to go back to retirement,” Blanch laughs. “It’s gonna be nice.”

But Blanch isn’t going to just bail on the city. He’s a responsible enough guy to make sure a suitable replacement will inherit his desk.

“I’m going to stick around long enough to get the next person trained and proficient enough to do the job,” he says.

Blanch grew up in Nixon, and went to college at the University of Texas, where he played football for the Longhorns.

“I played under Coach [Darrell] Royal from 1957-60,” he remembers. “I got to play in a Cotton Bowl and a Sugar Bowl.”

After graduating from UT, Blanch became the superintendent of schools for the Eldorado school district.

“I eventually decided to come back home,” he says. “Serving the city of Nixon was a good way to round out my career.”

In other business Monday, the council has decided to change its meeting time from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“It’s still going to be on Monday,” Blanch said during the meeting. “It’s just going to be easier for people to get here on time.”

The next Nixon city council meeting will be held Dec. 10 at Nixon City Hall.
