GONZALES — A local man ended up in county jail after police said he took off running while being detained about a hit and run.

At 11:52 p.m. July 14, Officer Ryan Salles was dispatched to the 1600 block of Weimar St. in reference to a hit and run accident, according to Capt. Allen Taylor. While en route Salles learned from dispatch that a white had struck the caller’s vehicle and left the scene.

Upon arrival, the officer spoke with Roger Reyna, 17, of Gonzales, and noticed he had bloodshot eyes and alcohol on his breath. When Salles began to question the victim, Reyna suddenly took off running. Due to Reyna’s intoxicated state, Salles chased after him, calling for backup while in pursuit.

Sheriff’s Deputy Darryl Hart was driving in the area and said over the radio that a man had ran away from him in the 1500 block of Mesquite St., heading east between a couple of buildings in the 1700 block of Waco St. This led Salles to believe it was Reyna trying to run back to his residence, Taylor said.

Officer Gabriel Trevino arrived in the 1700 block of Waco and found Reyna, who was arrested and transported to Gonzales County Jail. He was charged with evading arrest.
