A Karnes City man was jailed after officials said Gonzales County sheriff’s deputies busted him with synthetic marijuana and more than $4,000 in drug money.

Deputies made a routine traffic stop on Highway 80 on July 18, pulling over a silver Kia for speeding, according to GCSO spokeswoman Glori Wyatt. The deputy identified the driver as Jon Robert Briones, 23, of Karnes City.

Briones told the deputy he did not have a valid driver’s license but showed him his identification card. While speaking with Briones, the deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and asked Briones to step out of the car.

While searching the vehicle, the deputy discovered a wad of cash totaling $4,130. The deputy also located multiple small bags of synthetic marijuana.

Briones was transported to the Gonzales County Jail and charged with possession of a controlled substance in penalty group 2A. He was later released on bond.
