Rep. John Kuempel won a special election for the Texas House Seat 44 on Tuesday night.

Kuempel won by 66% including 730 votes in Gonzales County.

Kuempel will be filling his father’s seat, Edmund Kuempel, who died of a heart attack in early November, just two days after he was re-elected.

John defeated nine other candidates including local candidate Myrna McLeroy who landed 530 votes in Gonzales County.

John Kuempel had been considered the front runner, and the legislative seat had been widely expected to stay in Republican hands because the district is solidly GOP.

Voters choose between six Republicans, two Democrats and a Libertarian who have been running for the office for about a month. The second-runner, Republican Gary Inmon, got 10 percent.

John Kuempel’s victory gives the GOP 101 seats in the Texas House.
