I-10 wreck leads to 3 hospitalized

GONZALES — Congested traffic on Interstate 10 led to a two-vehicle car crash last week that authorities said sent three people to the hospital.

The Texas Highway Patrol reported that at 11:35 a.m. July 14, a 2009 International 18-wheeler driven by Martin Jimmerson, 52, of Houston, was headed westbound on I-10 carrying pipes when it was struck from behind by a 2015 Penske moving van driven by Shawn Cryst, 21, of Newton, Mass.

DPS troopers said the crash occurred due to backed up traffic on I-10 that had been caused by an earlier wreck in Guadalupe County (also on I-10). The van failed to slow down and struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler, causing severe damage to both vehicles, troopers said.

Cryst, who troopers said sustained severe injuries in the crash, was airlifted to SAMC Hospital in San Antonio. The passenger, identified as Denisz Jemely-Janov, 32, of Hungary, was taken to Gonzales Memorial Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Jimmerson was also taken to GMH and treated for minor injuries.
