GPD arrests local for interfering with public duties

GONZALES — A local man ended up behind bars after police said he refused to hand over his insurance card — and refused to get off his cell phone — during a routine traffic stop last week.

At 10:28 p.m. April 23, Officer Ryan Salles was traveling east on St. Andrew St. when he saw a vehicle run a stop sign in the 800 block of Kleine St., Capt. Allen Taylor said. Salles pulled the car over and identified the driver as Charles Adam Ramirez, 31, of Gonzales.

During questioning, Ramirez gave officers his driver’s license — but refused to hand over his insurance card, Taylor said. Ramirez also started making calls on his cell phone, and when officers instructed him to put it away, he refused to do so.

“Officers repeatedly asked Mr. Ramirez to put the phone down several times so they could conduct the interview,” Taylor said. “But he kept refusing.”

Officers arrested Ramirez and took him to Gonzales County Jail, and he was charged with interfering with public duties. Ramirez was also issued a citation for running a stop sign.

Man nabbed for theft

At 3:55 p.m. April 19, Officer Gabriel Trevino was dispatched to Walmart in reference to a report of a theft, Taylor said. Upon arrival Trevino met with the store’s asset protection manager, who said she had witnessed a man steal a set of tools from the store. Police found and arrested the man, identified as Michael Jasso, 46, of Cuero, and took him to Gonzales County Jail. He was charged with theft.
