Gonzales county commissioners designates December 3 Tree of Angels Day

GONZALES — County commissioners on Monday approved a resolution designating Dec. 3 as Tree of Angels Day, a special event for victims of violent crime.

County Attorney Paul Watkins told commissioners the event provides an opportunity for violent crime survivors and their families to bring an angel ornament and put it on the tree; each ornament symbolizing a remembrance of those who have been victimized.

“I think this would be a really nice thing to do for victims of crime in Gonzales County,” Watkins said. “Especially this time of year.”

The Tree of Angels began in 1991, initiated in Austin by Verna Lee Carr — a victim advocate with People Against Violent Crime (PAVC). Since 1990 Carr has helped victims of all types of violent crimes.

Lee, who soon learned how difficult it was for victims and their families during the holidays, established the Tree of Angels, an event honoring them by making it possible for a loved one to bring an angel ornament to place on a special Christmas tree.

“Since its inception, the Tree of Angels has offered a special time for remembering thousands of victims across Texas, other states and expands worldwide to include Australia,” Carr said. “It’s a reverent forum for the community to join together to remember, include and support victims of crime who are a part of our lives and communities.”

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Victoria College campus, with a reception immediately following the ceremony.

In other business, commissioners:

  • Approved the minutes of the Nov. 16 meeting
  • Approved the treasurer’s report
  • Approved budget amendments
