Fatal head-on collision still has questions

Department of Public Safety officials are still trying to piece together what caused a Gonzales woman to veer into oncoming traffic Saturday morning on U.S. Highway 183 just south of I-10, resulting in a head-on collision that killed a San Marcos man.

According to DPS trooper Robert Ynclan, a northbound 2001 Toyota Forerunner driven by Alice Ramos Segura, 50, of Gonzales, crossed the centerline of the highway 11½ miles north of Gonzales near the Caldwell County line about 6:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25.

Michael Burke, 25, of San Marcos, was southbound in a Chevrolet S-10 pickup and attempted to take evasive action when he saw the northbound vehicle approaching, Ynclan said. Burke and a passenger in his vehicle, Andrew Chet Hamm, 18, of San Marcos, were enroute to an oilfield worksite near Westhoff when the accident occurred.

Hamm was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Piece Deidra Voigt. Burke was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, and Segura was airlifted to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Burke’s and Segura’s conditions could not be confirmed as of press time.

The accident closed Highway 183 for much of Saturday morning, and is still under investigation, Ynclan said.
