Commissioners appoint Schmidt Fire Marshall

The Gonzales County Commissioners Court met in regular session on Monday to discuss several important agenda items.

Keith Schmidt was appointed Gonzales County Fire Marshall. Schmidt already serves the city of Gonzales as the local fire chief, and is a co-owner of Schmidt and Sons. “In our subdivision rules, it would be quite advantageous for us to have a Fire Marshall,” said County Judge David Bird. “It would certainly help us with our planning. It would be great to have Keith to oversee fire safety issues in Gonzales County.” Bird motioned to appoint Schmidt, and the Court subsequently voted in favor.

Additionally, the Court appointed Ann Alexander from Norma’s House to the Golden Crescent Public Protection Committee for a two-year term. They also re-appointed Swan Reid, Joan Walshak, Marjorie Malaer, Evelyn Gottwald, and Marjorie Lee Burnett as members to the Archives and Records Advisory Board for a two year term, and Craig Hines to the Luling Foundation. Hines’ term will commence on January 1, 2011.

The Court also set January 4, 2011 as a date to receive bids on the purchase of two patrol cars. “We will approve them on January 10th at the regular Commissioner’s Court meeting,” added Bird.

In addition, the Court motioned and approved the date of December 17, 2010 as effective for county burn ban, as well as banning aerial fireworks until further notice.

In other news, the Court:

• Authorized a county match on employee Texas County and District Retirement System deposit.

• Approved Sole Source Justification purchase of a 2004 F350 Ford Pickup Truck for Precinct 2.

• Considered and approved budget amendments.

• Read and approved all bills.
