Right smack, dab in the middle of Texas lays one of the largest rodeo events in the state.

Gonzales will be thriving with wranglers, cowboys, cowgirls and all of the above beginning Sunday with the opening of the 2011 Texas Junior High State Rodeo Finals at J.B. Wells Park.

The Jr. High finals in Gonzales will be the home of hundreds of Jr. High rodeo competitors in 13 rodeo events and will run through June 4.

For one week, Gonzales is home where “the elite compete” featuring top cowboys and cowgirls from 10 regions in Texas.

Competitors will vie for awards, scholarships as well as the coveted honor of representing Texas at the National Finals Rodeo held each July.

The mayhem officially begins Saturday when contestants begin to arrive and Monday the full-blown finals will begin promptly at 9 a.m.

There are over 110 qualifying junior high school region rodeos set for the 2010-11 rodeo season and 25 cities across Texas play host to the TJHRA region rodeos.

The rodeo finals in Gonzales will attract an average of over 1,500 spectators per day which would equal over 10,500 over the course of the finals.

Boys events include: breakaway calf roping, junior bulls, chute dogging, calf roping, goat tying and team roping.

Girls events include: barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, team roping, breakaway calf roping and ribbon roping.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate and are $8 for adults and $5 per child. A season pass can also be purchased for admittance all week, $60 for adults and $40 for children.
