GONZALES — A local man has been jailed for driving while intoxicated and drug charges after police investigated a motor vehicle crash under the Hwy. 183 Guadalupe River bridge shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday.

Officer J.D. Holt was dispatched to the area under the bridge after a motor vehicle crash was reported there. At the scene, Holt noticed several vehicles at that location, including a blue Chevrolet truck stuck in the mud near the river bank, said Gonzales Police Department spokesman Capt. Allen Taylor.

Several by-standers were attempting to pull the vehicle out of the mud, Holt’s report indicated. EMS personnel were also at the scene. An individual at the scene pointed out a man later identified as Alejandro Juarez as being involved in the crash.

When Holt spoke with Juarez, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol about his person. Holt also reported that it appeared that Juarez had urinated on himself and appeared confused. His eyes were very bloodshot.

Juarez admitted to drinking beer and that he was the driver of the blue pickup.

Game Warden Dan Waddell also arrived at the crash site to assist with the investigation.

Juarez was unable to successfully perform tasks in a field sobriety test, Holt’s report indicated. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor due to a prior conviction.

Officers found multiple beer cans in the bed of the truck. In the cab of the vehicle, they found a substance that appeared to be synthetic marijuana along with rolling papers. They also located a usable amount of marijuana with more rolling papers in the vehicle.

He was taken to the hospital where a blood sample was collected pursuant to a search warrant issued by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Deidra Voigt.

Juarez admitted the contraband was his. He was taken to the Gonzales County Jail and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 2A; possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license invalid.

On Sunday, Officer Dewey Sumner was on patrol in the 1300 block of St. Louis when he noticed a man walking across the grass at the junior high. Holt made contact with the male and positively identified him as Tommy Bernard — who he knew to have an outstanding arrest warrant for a parole violation. Officer Dustin Kinkaid arrived to assist with the arrest.

As officers searched Bernard subsequent to the arrest, they discovered a capped unused needle and a plastic bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. They also found a plastic bag containing a white powder substance they believed to be methamphetamine. They also found a white rock in a plastic bag that officers believe to be meth as well. The substances found in the plastic bags yielded a positive field test for cocaine.

Barnard was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 1, and the outstanding parole warrant.

On April 13, Officer Dewey Sumner was contacted by a woman who described several incidents that Sumner determined were stalking. The victim, who lives outside the city limits but within Gonzales County, told Sumner that Daniel Montoya was contacting her and making threats every time she came into town. He was also causing problems for her family.

Sumner obtained statements from the victim, her family and two witnesses and an arrest warrant for stalking was issued on April 14.

Investigator Jason Montoya and a Gonzales County deputy sheriff went to Daniel Montoya’s residence and arrested him.
