Local woman dies in smashup on New Year's Eve

A 43-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle collision New Year's Eve on State Highway 97 north of Gonzales.

Cynthia Ann Strait of Gonzales was fatally injured in the accident reported at 10:19 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, on Highway 97 slightly more than a mile north of Gonzales.

The accident was investigated by a state trooper who reported that Strait was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am and had pulled into a private drive on the east side of Highway 97. The private drive was located at a fireworks stand.

According to the trooper's report, the Pontiac's driver attempted to pull out from the private drive to go south on Highway 97 and drove in front of a northbound vehicle.
